Brief 1: Publication 3 // Portfolio

The third part of this brief is another publication; to design a publication of Bellas photography for her third and final year, her portfolio. She has chosen this format because it reflects her interest in fashion magazines, layout etc.

She sent through a few images of the basic style / format she has in mind, a starting point for my design...'Oh Comley' Magazine.

Brief 1: Photo & Text example the Bella sent

This is an image the Bella sent to me as a basis of what she wants the text to look like on each of the pages. This will be the 4-6 lines of the poems. She also mentioned that she likes a hand written style of typeface, I will be experimenting with both than and a sans-serif typeface as I don't want the text to over power or distract from the quality of the photograph like it does in this example.

Brief 1: Arthur Frank Book

This is the publication that Bella wants to base her book on. In her book she will only be using 10 double page spreads with only one photograph per spread.

Brief 1: Code D'or Branding

This project is an example of how a simple, but bold logo design has been accentuated by the use of a spot colour to create a eye catching brand identity. In relevance to Bella's idenityt, her photography is already very vibrant so for the logo to be as strong as the images, it needs to be in bold, and possibly applied in white when overlaid on full colour images.

Brief 1: Dwell

Source: http://www.behance.net/search?search=packaging

This publication is an alternative travel guide that focuses on large scale images and alternating type placements. The first of the publications I am designing for Bella is a book of Roald Dahl's revolting rhypes which Bella has illustrated through a series of set up photographs. The photography is going to be the main focus on the spreads, this is an example of the placement and organisation of text so that it doesn't distract from the photography.

The second A4 publication is going to Bella's portfolio. We decided that it would be best to produce a publication of her work rather than having it on large boards because in this format it is easy to carry and reflects Bella's interest in fashion photography magazines. This spread is a marker point for me on how to arrange a series of images with a body of text on a double page spread, I do not know what the content of the portfolio will be yet, all I know is that Bella is collaborating with a fashion designer. When I get more information on the content then I can make some more informed decisions about how to proceed with the layout.
